This movie examines the nuances of teenagehood, what motivates teenagers to act in the way they do, and the complexities of sister dynamics. As the movie progresses, Kat examines why she is so abrasive with her peers, while Bianca explores why she adheres to what her men expect from her. In response to this, the boys, infatuated with Bianca, set up Kat with a charming suitor, Patrick (Heath Ledger). Their father knows that Kat has no interest in dating and makes a deal that Bianca can date when Kat does. The conflict in the film begins when Bianca wants to start dating, but her father will not let either of them date during high school. She follows the rules, doesn’t cause trouble, and expresses desire for a boyfriend. While male characters assume the worst about Kat, they fawn over Bianca because she fits their ideas of the perfect woman. Males pass her off as obnoxious because of their sexist ways. Kat is assertive and gains no respect or recognition from the men in the film. Kat claims that parties are “a lame excuse for all the idiots in our school to drink beer and rub up against each other in hopes of distracting themselves from the pathetic emptiness of their meaningless, consumer-driven lives.” Her constant need to express her non-conforming opinions gets her into trouble with everyone, including her teachers, family, and boyfriends. At the beginning, they are depicted as harsh stereotypes, but their character development throughout shows how they challenge and embrace their labels. Bianca is your typical ditzy, shallow, popular girl, and Kat is mean, unpopular, and unliked by her peers. While Bianca worries about being adored by everyone and being popular, her older sister Kat consistently does the contrary. Kat and Bianca are sisters who couldn’t be any more different. 10 Things I Hate About You covers this power imbalance between men and women through the film’s main characters, Kat (Julia Stiles) and Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). This film flourishes with meaningful questions about high school popularity, incredibly dynamic characters, and modern-day humor with a twang of Shakespearian language.įrom a young age, women are told to stay quiet and not voice their opinions. This movie takes the same themes of women challenging their societal stereotypes but repackages it with two wildly different sisters in high school. Including more Shakespeare adaptations, like Romeo + Juliet, the satirical Not Another Teen Movie, cult classic She's All That, and women-led teen buddy comedy Booksmart, this list is full of gems that are as sharp and utterly romantic as 10 Things I Hate About You.Gil Junger’s 1999 film, 10 Things I Hate About You, retells William Shakespeare’s 1594 play, Taming of the Shrew, for teenagers. If you want another movie that makes you feel all the giddiness of 10 Things, this list has plenty of ideas. 10 Things I Hate About You has definitely stood the test of time with its strong, feminist woman lead, but it's definitely a product of its time, when the landscape of teen rom-coms was overly white and heteronormative. The film is full of young actors who went on to become stars, including Gabrielle Union, who was criminally underused in quite a few '90s and early 2000s teen movies. Who didn't want to go out on a paintball date after that scene of Patrick and Kat making out covered in paint? Oh, and not to mention that iconic punch Bianca lands on Joey. The movie is packed with unforgettable moments, like when Kat drunkenly dances on top of a table ( this supposedly got Julia Stiles cast in Save the Last Dance ) and when Patrick serenades Kat on the school's bleachers as a romantic grand gesture. Eventually, Patrick wins her over and starts to (gasp!) catch real feelings for her (meanwhile, we were over here catching real feelings for Heath Ledger). And Patrick has certainly got his work cut out for him, since Kat is adamantly antisocial and antidating. This leads Cameron to come up with a plan: he persuades bad boy Patrick Verona ( Heath Ledger) to woo Kat - for a price, of course. There's just one problem: not only is Bianca more interested in senior Joey Donner, she also can't date unless her older sister, Kat ( Julia Stiles), dates, owing to their overprotective father's rule. In the rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, new student Cameron ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt) wants to go out with popular sophomore Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). The 1999 modern retelling of Shakespeare's comedy The Taming of the Shrew remains a cult classic over two decades later for a reason.
